When you say Crankcase sensor do you really mean Crankshaft Positioning Sensor?

If it were mine, I would go to www.cruiser54.com and complete tips 1 through 5 before doing anything else. Don't need a mechanic to do them either.

Does that mean it turns over? Or doesn't even do that?

It could be the computer. If there is no spark, then you start at the plugs and work backwards to the battery. Have you had a chance to do anything yet after your first posting?

No, let me fix that for you:

Trust nothing those idiots did. Nothing. Assume nothing they did was right. Nothing. Clear the history completely out of your mind.

Start over, troubleshoot systematically. Clean slate. Focus on the symptoms, and do not rule out anything or skip anything based on past actions by these clowns.

My knowledge of the early XJ is limited, but the 2 "high probability" issues that I would be concerned with

1) an open wire or connector fail somewhere

2) a short circuit in a sensor or its wiring..sensors are connected directly to PCM and a direct short to the PCM is not good
