JeepLover.....

go with Salad's advice ...... no need to wrap your mind around the interlubes and confuse matters.... DO NOT drop the pan!!!

you need to remove the larger bolt in the middle, should be underneath and not on the side like the one in that pic... use a socket to fit or simply an adjustable wrench..(lefty loosy, righty tighty..) there will be little pressure on bolt and should come off easily, do not force it..

make sure you have a drain pan to catch what little fluid you have in there and a few rags around, you'll need a thin funnel to add fluid at the dip stick...

remember to replace plug before filling it will only need to be tight and not overtight......

come back with good news, and my advice would be read up here on this forum and learn a little more about your beloved jeep, there are a lot of knowledgeable people willing to help

yes it does.... its in the middle/back of the pan underneath...(and by back of pan I mean, think, closest to your driveshaft/or rear tires...)

Checking fluid level.

The tranamission fluid must be up to normal operating temperature.

Transmission fluid is at normal operating temperature after driving for at least 15 miles.

Park the Jeep on a level surface.

With the engine running at idle, shift the tansmission through all gear ranges and back to PARK.

Set the parking brake.

With the engine idiling, remove the dipstick and wipe it off then reinstall it in the filler tube. Pull it out again and check the fluid level. The correct fluid level will be near the top of the "OK" range, but NEVER above the "MAX" line. Overfilling will cause foaming of the fluid and cause fluid overheating, and possible puking of the fluid out the tranny vent.

I think it's a 14MM head on that plug.

For a simple fill-up it's about 3.75 quarts. The entire system holds about 8 quarts, though, so don't be afraid to buy in bulk. Changing all of the fluid involves multiple drain-n-fills and only 3.75 comes out of the transmission drain.

Yep thats the right stuff. XJ is ancient, you won't see it on any modern lubricants.

Oh and don't be surprised if you break the 1/4" ratchet or can't get the bolt out. That's pretty small stuff.

Man I love my AX-15. Does anyone think it could be something with the Tranny Range Sensor?

sorry to hear that... how much fluid did you put in?? did you let warm up before you drove?? did it drive fine for a while or instant problem?? only at stops??

someone will chime in that can lead you in the right direction, haven't had a problem with mine so I'm not that versed...we'll start with little things first then onto the big ticket items..

transmission throttle valve?
solenoid, sensors or wire...

maybe worse case scenario its the torque converter...

EDIT:: have you tried to drive it shifting manually??

I took out 3 quarts and then put in 3 new quarts of fluid. and no I did not let it warm up I jumped right in and started it maybe that wasn't good? it went fine down the road but when I came to a stop at a stop sign I would press the gas and the engine would rev but still wouldn't move seems to be only at stops and my transmission sounds a little weird maybe I need a new transmission?

you need to take baby steps before jumping at the big stuff..

you need to check the fluid with the motor running and at operating temps...

it may be something as simple as a sensor
