You should also see the case parting line running the length of the trans, AX15's dont have this parting line. I would say throw that junky trans away and find a AX15 to put in there.

okay so i found out its a ba10/5 or w/e and its actually a 87 cherokee but the title says 86 and everything else says 86 so im guessing it was build late 86 but they just call it a 87? and im having a hard frkin time gettin to the top 2 bolts on the top, they are funny shaped, so i bought some sockets at sears and ill see of it works.

ah ok that makes more sense. Your Cherokee is a 1987. Your title should not say 86. A build date of June 86 or later makes it an 87. 87s came with the 4.0 and ba10/5 combo, so it's not a swap - it came that way.

hmm it says 86 :s but idk its a 87, but that makes sence now i just hate that im pulling my tranny mainly just for the slave cylinder -.- lol. but sence its gonna be out i think im going to replace the tranny as well it growls. im hopin its just a main berring or somthing that i could replace. because the 5speeds kinda seam hard to find around here(wa) and is there anything bad about the auto trans? i might buy another cherokee with a auto in it and just wondering how they last. and it would just be a street Queen

you can swap in either a AX-15 5-speed or a AW-4 auto from a newer cherokee. They are plenty strong for most anything and hold up very well. Would have to swap the bellhousing, transfer case, and driveshafts as well though.

Going manual to auto will be very difficult though since you'll need to swap the PCM and TCM and wiring, and those won't agree with your current engine sensors - best throw that idea out. AX-15s are pretty plentiful.
