Jeep Towing/Shock/Leafs/ETC
Ok here goes. I use my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport to tow a couple four wheelers on a trailer. The thing is when I took the lift off the Jeep the Leafs are sagging so bad that if I got people only riding in the back and hit a bump I am slamming the bump stops in the rear,.
I am wondering If I use air shocks on the rear, with enough air could I sit level with the trailer and atvs loaded?
I dont want to fool with changing the Leafs and want to just get some good air shocks to compensate for them.
Has anyone used air shocks on the rear of a cherokee? If so how much will the shocks raise the rear from no air to say max air? Looking for options. FEEDBACK NEEDED AND THANKS

I would suggest not using air shocks due to the lack of strength where the upper attachment is. I have used air bags successfully though. But yu will have to use after market wheels to clear them.

you can try a helper spring it bolts to your pack and adds some spring resistance when loaded some of them can be attached without unbolting the axles u bolts just do a search on google for helper springs

That what I was wanting to do, Hell its the easiest just bolt the shocks on and mount the air line and air up as needed. But now I am thinking that the upper mounts are wouldnt be really strong so......
Now I am thinking of a way to fab up my own air bag helper kit. Hell If I went that far why not make it to where you could raise it up about 4" when you need it off road and drop it back down when on the road Now ive got all kinds of ideas and not sure what I will do. I know an air bad setup will be alot better and you could make it onboard so you could adjust it at any time without being around an air compressor etc. Plus it would be from the leafs to the frame so it would be strong. IDK now im all messed up on what I will do

I am guessing there would be a way. But the Big Rig Cherokees that 4 wheel hard core still mounts the shocks up in the same place so you would think it could handle air shocks just for hauling about 1500 pounds of stuff

worst that could happen is you break a shock mount and have to re-do it and possibly replace the shock. If you do it post a write-up as I have the same issue when I haul my gear and friends around.

I will keep it updated as I do whatever im going to do for the fix Im up in the air on what to do right now. For the money and ease of getting it done the air shocks I think will be great. I do wonder about the upper mounting but like I said, Look at some of the rough trailing some XJ's do with the shocks mouted the same way.

If you can weld or have a buddy who can, get some plate and just reinforce the upper mount and go for it.

I have welded for about 6 years. I could do it. I just question if it really needs it or not. I mean I have saw cherokees Jump about 15ft high and land really hard.It didnt break the shock mounts. I dont think using air shocks to pull 2000 pounds and less will hurt it. When I get the money ima get some Monroe air shocks from advance and give them a try!
