Default Jeep timing when rebuilding engine

Hello,

I am currently in the process of remanufacturing the engine on my 1996 XJ with a 4.0. The machine work was done and seems to be good. The rebuild kit is mostly installed. The guy that is putting everything back together is a knowledgeable guy when it comes to motors, but not this particular motor. He is telling me I need to get the injectors synced up with the rotor/distributor with a scan tool before I run the motor or risk doing damage. I feel this is not correct because I have not heard of it being necessary. And I also removed and replaced the distributor previously with some issues that I was able to workout by coming here and getting some awesome advice. I believe the timing is all built into the timing chain and cam and crank shaft mechanisms and if they are installed correctly the ECU will work out the timing on its own. Can one of you amazing gurus shed some light on this for me ? Please and thanks !

No scan tool needed to sync injectors. Camshaft position sensor is located inside the distributor. If the distributor is indexed properly (sounds like you did this before), then the cam sync is good to go. Just make sure it's not 180 out.

Yes, thank you! That’s what I figured. I have done this before and dealt with a new distributor that was 180 out. And was schooled here and was able to spin the shaft gear to its proper place and the sea of misfire codes was navigated properly. Thanks again!

As long as you are at top dead center on the correct stroke of the crank when you put the distributor in it should fire right up. No sync or programming needed.
