Default jeep starters are strange

Took my starter to autozone to have it tested everything was a pass. I new it wasnt my battery or alternator because i had them tested the day before. The truck just wasnt cranking , i thought it could possibly be the ignition switch since the starter passed the test. But i thought to my self it doesnt have a flywheel against it nor is it trying to fight the compression of the engine. I purchased the new starter and installed it . It fired right up , so dont always trust the bench test.

Starters have windings in them and over time they can wear out in spots. My shop teacher told me this, my starter would quit on me on occasion. After a wack on the starter it would work again. So i replaced it.

I was having to beat on my starter a couple months ago... it got worse and finally quit. It would turn over but the gear would not eject to contact the fly wheel. I took it out and had it bench tested at the parts store. It tested fine, gear ejected and everything.. I had him test it again. This time the gear stuck in the out position. By the way you can reach the starter from the top with a piece of pipe. That way you don't have to crawl underneath..

I had an ALT a few months back that did the same thing at A/Z.

Had them check it twice, even had a different guy check it.
They said it was OK.

I bought a new one anyway.
Works beautiful.

Took the old one to NAPA and had them test it.
They guy came back with it and said, "Whatcha got here is a fancy boat anchor. Its toast."

Like was just said... "NO AutoZone's strange"
