Default Jacked up NP231

Well my NP231 is all jacked up. I was told by a few guys here that it sounds like my chain is slipping and i need to replace it. I found a walk threw on the web and it looks too involved for me. It sucks because I know how to work on cars very well, if its a 70s era muscle car. This XJ is my daily and I cant afford to not have it for even one day. Should i search the junk yards and hope i can find one that works or should i bend over, grab my ankles and take it to a repair shop? Even though I hate shops, I know they'll be able to fix it way faster than me. If anyone in AZ has done this and would like to give me a hand, I might do that too. I'll cover beer, pizza and whatever else you want.

the 231 is pretty light weight and easy to push up in there by yourself. is there oil in the TC now ?? i would NOT take it to a repair shop, if you can turn a wrench. start lookin on your local boards to find a good 231 and gitter dunn!

i just got done swappin my 231 in my xj so if you have any questions let me know

Definitely find a good used NP231 in a junkyard and swap it yourself. That will be the quickest and cheapest way to get yourself back on the road.

If you don't have to turn in your old transfer case for core, rebuild it at your leisure tossing in a SYE, 4:1 lo range and an HD chain while you're at it.

Aw gee, you had to bring the cost of parts up....LOL...that is why I'm still using a transfer case lowering kit and stock lo range. I can do the work just TOTALLY REDICULOUS what the parts cost to do these modifications.

If the junkyard will offer you any kind of a warranty is a good sign. If you're on your own just make sure it shifts smoothly and that the input and both outputs turn smoothly and have no extra side to side play and of course as you're moving all the moving parts, that it doesn't make any kind of wierd noises that would indicate a shat bearing. Also farely clean fluid is another good sign.

Best thing to do, would be to crawl under your XJ and see what is written on your Transfer case tag. When you go looking for a replacement, look for the same on a donor TC. If you can find one out of the same year XJ, then you're golden but, all XJ NP231s are pretty much the same.
