Looking to buy a used NP231j T-Case. The seller I’m working with has asked if my XJ has internal or external splines. I have no idea. Is there a way to tell without dropping it?
The seller is stating that 1995 is a mixed year for the 231 cases and needs to know my set up to see if his will work.

Did any MJ/XJ/TJ Jeep use external splines on the input shaft?
Another thing to be aware of is there is apparently a clocking difference between the transfer cases such that the transfer case from a Wrangler may not directly bolt onto an XJ. As I understand it's not too big a deal to adjust, but definitely something to be aware of.

Yeah, the TJ is clocked differently to keep ground clearance to a maximum. Because of the short wheelbase it tends to high-center more easily. Or maybe it's the other way around.....

There is a note on the Novak site about 1994 GRAND Cherokees having a funky input shaft with external splines.
