Looking at getting some LSD's, no need for full lockers for me... but anyways, new ring and pinion or no? can i keep stock gears than upgrade later to a lower ratio like 4.10 or 4.56. I know installing an aussie is super easy what about the Trutrac? i really dont want all that click bang boom back there lol. Anyone installed them or got any helpful hints? I like that fact that they are cheaper that full selectable lockers (ARB and OX) but provide really good traction. Just trying to figure out how in depth the install is gonna be and about gearing. thanks pals!

Truetracs will have the same carrier break as any other carrier. Dana 30 3.55 down 3.73 up, Dana 35 3.31 down and 3.55 up and 8.25 has no carrier break. If you are running 3.55s which are stock for most XJs with an auto then you would have to replace the front later on if you regear.
Installing them will take some specialty tools since they are a full case LSD. That is why a lot of people run lunch box lockers because you only replace the spider gears. You will have to set back lash etc as well as shims and new bearings and a way to press the bearings on.
I personally hated the Truetrac I had in my front 44 because it worked like an open carrier but that happens with a light rig and large tires with any LSD.

thanks, prety much answered my question. installing and all isnt the problem, just was unsure if i had to replace the housing or diff cover to fit the LSD. I just dont want to have all the noise assosiated with the aussie, and also will be driving on the road alot as well. I was reading if you just apply brake pressure the diff should lock up pretty tight iwth the truetrac. not true in your case?

Kinda hard to use the brakes with the front axle. If noise is the issue a powertrax locker is a lunchbox locker that is completely silent. No backlash or bearings to worry about and will work with any gear ratio. They can also be found cheaper than the truetrac.

I have no issues running the left foot on the brake pedal to "lock" the front tires up.
If you ever plan to regear, do it now so you are not buying differentials twice.
If you daily drive the rig and have no patience for locker type action, or daily drive in snowy winter climate then the TT's are going to be right up your alley.
If the rig fills a "second vehicle" role and gets wheeled rather hard... you might be happier with lockers.
