Default I'm not an electrical guy, HELP!

I have a 96 XJ,4.0, AW4 and 4wd.
Once in a while when I start my XJ the gas gauge goes to 1.5 tank and the others go to zero and won't move, it also sputters when this happens. The last time it lasted for about 3 weeks this time it lasted about 2 minutes. Once the gauges start working properly then the sputter goes away. What the heck could be causing this?

You should also check the electrical plug at the fuel pump and make sure it is clean and tight.

Check all the grounds. Possibly one at the fuse block?

Try unplugging the CPS and see if that makes the gauge(s) work. (course it won't run without it). If they DO work change the CPS.

O.k., I cleaned all grounds til really shiney and still nothing. It's only the gas, tach and speedo all other gauges work fine. I found the sputter problem. My TPS was full of mud and so was the harness, I cleaned them both and it runs great now but the gauges still won't work. Any other ideas?

So now, you have no sputtering whatsoever?? Just the gauge issues?

I removed the cluster today and checked the connections and now none of the gauges work at all. I even tried a different cluster my buddy brought over and nothing on it works either. The other cluster worked in my buddies XJ just fine but not in mine.

Ok, I fixed the volts, temp and oil pressure gauges the fuse was blown. I still need help with the RPM,MPH and fuel gauges. Anyone have any ideas why they don't work or why my fuel gauge is on 1.5 tank. Would the NSS/back up switch have anything to do with it? My NSS went bad so I bypassed it.
