ignition problems
Here's the problem my xj will start with no problem but once I let thhe key go and it is in its running position it shuts off. I have no idea whats wrong. I have checked every fuse and connection. A buddy said that the switch might be the probem, but I don't know how to check if my ignition switch is working. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Just ran into a problem with my ignition switch/lock cylinder. So i have been inside and out for hours on these. Do you have a pick and pull junkyard near you? Also what year is your cherokee? It definitely sounds like you may want to try the ignition switch first, you could probably get one from a junkyard for about 5$ with no warranties and at least try it out. If it isn't that at least your only down 5$ instead of buying a new one for 20-40$

I have a 96 xj. Thankfully I ran into a machanic at o'reilly's and he helped me narrow down the problem to my ingnition switch. But there are no pick-a-part junk yards in yuma, and the junk yards dont have very many xj's, so I had to order a new one. it was cheeper than driving to phoenix. Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully this works...

Alternator is an easy swap. Good time to do a thorough inspection of the serpentine belt while you're at it; they don't last forever. I like the Goodyear Gatorback for a replacement belt. Be sure it's darn snug; the belt on the 4.0 needs to be pretty tight to stay quiet. Use a tension gauge if you are unsure.

I am in the middle of putting my new alternator on, and I will in fact need a new belt pretty soon, thanks for the tip. Also this alternator is a pain to change compered to my 89. I feel like I've taken apart half of my engine just to get it out. But no big deal, I love doing the work myself.
