There is aftermarket plugs, cap, rotor, wires, and coils. All which probly give better spark and reliability but there are no points in a cherokee.

I believe points and condensor ignitions started to disappear mid to late 70's in most autos. No?

probably. in the 80s i can think of no automobiles that ran points, off the top of my head. except aircooled vws. even chevrolet went to electronic pick ups in the distributor prior to 80, i think. all the euro cars were electronic ignition by the middle 70s and americans right after

do you guys think it would be worth it to replace the distributor with a high perf. ( if available). I have done this on my 2 previous CJs. This is my first time with an XJ. I've done the coil, plugs, and wires, and was about to do the cap and rotor and possibly the distributor. Don't know if it would be worth it?

If you dont want to spend the $$$ for a entire new hi po distributor you can pick up a rebuild kit for yours which consists of a cap, rotor, new gear, cap gasket, and motor to distributor gasket for 25-60 bucks. If the cap has any internal corrosion your other mods "Accell coil and wires" can't live up to their potential.

I use to work at Honest Charlies Speed Shop.
I use to setup HEI and Ford dists. but never did a Jeep or dodge.
But thats fairly irrelevant with electronic computer controlled ignitions. The timing curve is what it is. Short of setting the base timing there is very little that can be tweaked manually internally.

We use to tune them for the maximum advance as soon as possible without pinging.

i have the MSD ignition with 8.2mm plugs, basic cap and rotor and copper plugs. The MSD ignition helps a ton! i also have a Blaster Coil to go with the MSD ignition. I have a gap of 50 on the spark plugs (per the coils recommendation) and it improved a bit on fuel economy and throttle response improved. I got it off of craigslist for $100 for the coil and ignition box.

They are on craigslist often!

a good set of wires (8mm +) and a properly gapped spark plug make a big difference
