Default Identifying which gas tank

As the title implies, I am wondering how I can identify which gas tank my 01 xj has. The build sheet says it came with the 20 gallon tank, but the empty light always comes on around when it only takes 14 or 15 gallons to fill it up again. I had two thoughts on what might be causing this. Could it be that someone later replaced either the gas tank with a smaller one for some reason. Or could someone have replaced the fuel sender with one from a smaller tank and it's somehow causing the problem. I use a obd 2 Bluetooth adaptor to monitor my mpg, and it usually reads around 17 mpg, but then when I calculate it based on how much it takes to fill up again, it's usually much lower. I go on a couple of long camping trips throughout the year, and want to have a reliable knowledge of how much gas I have. Thanks all.

You're not empty when the fuel light turns on. You have a 20 gallon tank.

Mine used to come on and I would put in 15 gallons, that was like the first 3 fuel pumps or so, now it comes on at 17 gallons, but when it would come on at 15 I had driven 50ish miles or so with it on before. I'd say you have the 20 gallon tank and not to worry.

anyway to correct this error in the reading then? I get too anxious after driving about 50 miles with it on and finally give in to fill it.

There are prescription medications for that issue.

My gas tank light comes on when I still have 8 gallons in the tank. Lol. I've seen people remove the fuel pump sending unit and bent the fuel level arm in order to make it read more correctly.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's better to error on the side of caution in this case.
