Default Identify This

Can anyone help me identify what kind of transfer case I have? Its missing the little round dog tag with all the info. The XJ is a 88 but the guy I bought it from put a 96 engine in it and I am not sure but I think the transmission and transfer case may be from the 96 too. The rear output seal is leaking and I am having a really hard time finding a replacement without knowing the right model. I thought I had a NP242 but I have tried two different seals for the NP242 and neither one will fit mine.

It's a 96 model. Could be either a 231 or 242. What is your shift pattern?

I've been to 3 auto parts stores. When they look up 96 cherokee rear output seal, the seal is not right. My drive shaft is approximately 1 and 1/8". The hole for drive shaft on the seals they are giving me are too big and the outside diameter of the seal is too small.

Take a picture of the transfer case shifter boot, it will have the pattern on it. Like the thing that says 2wd N 4wd, etc.
