My Jeep is definitely a "mutt" there is no telling what it came off of.

I can't help but think of that Johnny Cash song "one piece at a time"... "its a 88,89,90,96...automobile

I was very clear when I asked them for a "rear output shaft seal for the transfer case on my 96 jeep cherokee.

These are the seals that do not fit...
Carquest -4370N
MasterPro PT3946
So, the verdict is that I should continue to ask for a 96, 242, rear output shaft seal. I have one more store left that I can try, maybe they will get it right.

Idk wazzup. I often get bearings and bushings just taking the old one in. Besides getting them by "app", they can just measure them or find numbers on'm.

I was gonna try that. I just didn't want to pull off the old one and not be able to get a new one in the same day. Since the Jeep is my only ride. May have to do it that way though.

Fyi. Sometimes a seal will leak because the shaft moves. There may be a bushing in that tail housing behind the seal...haven't been into one myself.

also, dont forget to sand the shaft where the seal lip sits, there is probably a rust line which will eat up the new seal, and clean out the sand grit with a little kerosene then oil with atf

maybe also ask them to bring out a seal for a '97 so you can compare them. You could also measure the shaft without taking it apart possibly

Your not gonna get the right seal from any parts stores. The part numbers are all wrong. The oem seal part # is the same as a different aftermarket seal part #. My buddie ended up getting the right one from the dealer. Not super cheap but I think it was still only around 25 bucks. I have the box the seal came In at home and will take a look when I get in.
