I should have said " get the right one by using the parts #" bringing it in might work but I have little faith in parts store staff these days. It's a newer style 242/231 (96+) same tj or xj

I googled "Jeep transfer cases" and looked at about a thousand pics I found this picture of a 231. It seems to match up the best. I will still probably have to take in the old seal if I don't destroy it taking it off.

OK I have a dumb question. How do you know those seals will not fit if you have not disassembled it and tried? Are you just comparing visual aspects?

There is where I found my seal and bushing. I recommend replacing the bushing at the same time or else the seal will not last as long

I took the drive shaft off and held it up to the old seal. I also slid it over the drive shaft. Its about an 1/8" to big for the drive shaft and about an 1/8" smaller than the outside diameter of the old seal.
I'm going to take these seals back and ask for one that fits a 231 and see where that gets me.
I will see if I can find a bushing as well. I will need to search the forum on how to replace it. Anyone know of a good thread on this?

After taking a closer look at the seal with a magnifying glass, I found a part number on the rubber that was partially worn away and I was able to guess the rest using google, trial and error (uh0950e). I found only one link to a guy on Wranglerforum with the same problem. His transfer case is a 231 and his seal had 2 numbers (uh0950e and 19129). I went back to ALL the auto part stores in my area and asked them to look for the seal again. No luck. Apparently this seal just doesn't exist in their computers. When I got back home I continued my search by googling the other part number, I found only a couple of sites that had a seal that might fit. The one that looks the most promising is here... http://cobratransmission.com/index.p...ts_id=55023013
Today I will order the seal an keep my fingers crossed.

^^this

When I get the t-case seal, I tell them I have a YJ, that gets the right 231 output seal. This won't work if you have a 242 though

I gave you a link 2 weeks ago with correct seals and bushings, you can even call them and they will check the vital measurements. Zero issues with my install

on my 1990 231, the output seal part number is SKF 15047
not sure if the 242 has the same part number or not. can't remember when i changed the last one a few years ago.

Finally found the right one! I got it from cobratransmission.com
Their part number for the seal was 361071. It cost me $7.99 + shipping.
It fits great and no more leak! Thanks for everyone's help.

If the shifter bezel has not been swapped (which I am sure it hasn't). How can I be sure that the shift sequence matches. What is the shift pattern for a 231?
