ideas why my 1990 Laredo isn't downshifting correctly?

I noticed the last couple days, on a big hill I have to drive up to get to my house, that the truck slowly loses power up the hill... and rather than downshifting into a lower gear, it just keeps losing power and speed.

My 2K1 cherokee eats the hill alive... I'm gaining speed by the crest of it, and the old one USED to be that way until recently. Nothing has really changed, and I'm clueless about transmissions, so I'm not sure how to diagnose what the problem might be or how to remedy it.

Any suggestions? 230K on the engine, but it normally runs strong and has great power. I've cleaned the TB, IAC, TPS, truck idles well, seems powerful enough on the straight-aways, but on the hill it just loses power and never shifts down to make up for it.

Ideas?

Thanks so much!

Sounds like the TV (Throttle Valve) cable needs to be adjusted. JMO

Thanks blue. Is that the sort of thing that your average weekend mechanic would do themselves?
