On the recall for my 96 E22 REPROGRAM PCM AND INSPECT CATALYTIC CONVERTER 08/25/2006

I scheduled an appointment to have it done today, but after reading into it a bit more, I am having second thoughts. I read some horror stories about several PCM issues a few days after having it done, check engine light coming on immediately after, that sort of stuff, and typical dealership woes of them trying to charge for additional stuff(I'm pretty broke right now, new radiator took care of that...)

I had a new O2 sensor and cat put on in April(cat is aftermarket, and the PO replaced the other O2 sensor so so both sensors new since Dec.) so they probably won't tell me to replace that, and everything runs fine. Is there any reason to do it? Will it give me better mileage? Anyone else have experiences with this particular recall? As I said I really can't afford to have any problems arise from having this done, and I certainly can't afford a new PCM. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated!
