My friends '98 did this the other day it would start with about half throttle and then it would only stay running if you gave it gas. We took off his IACV (Idle Air Control Valvel) and cleaned it out and it ran great.
To do this you just need to take off your throttle body, careful not to tear the gasket, and remove the IACV (round tube looking sensor on the left if you are looking straight down). When you pull the sensor out it looks like a plunger and you can lightly wipe or brush the carbon out and spray it with brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner.
Worth a shot.

Your gas pump seal shouldn't stop the car from starting, it'll usually cause a check engine light, unless there's not enough pressure getting to the injectors.
