Default I got a leak....

Ok guys so I was out in the bush Firefighting and I left the keys to my jeep with my friend so he could use it to tow his dirtbike and other camping gear out for may long..well now my jeep is leaking between where the engine and the tranny meet...it has been sitting for about 8 months so i figure the seal just dried up and now leaks...what seal is that and how hard is it to put in?

Im gonna take a guess that it oil thats leaking if so its more than likely the rear main seal, its not too hard to replace the hardeast part is getting the vehicle high enough to drop the oil pan, then takeing the all the oil pan bolts out. It really straight forward repair there are several write up on here and other site about this

definitely a rear main seal. Too easy to fix.

I agree.. rear seal. Seems as though almost every jeep I've had is doomed with this issue......

....seems as though it's becoming just a general maintance thing now..

...and if replacement isn't convenient right away, park your vehicle with the nose facing downhill. Seems to help.

Before you replacing the main. Make sure it is not comming from the valve cover or oil filter adapter, both of those leak MORE and both will drip from the same place as a rear main. Clean the motor and search from the top down. Sucks to spend 4-8 hour fighting with the Rear main, to find out it was your valve cover all the time. Unless the rear main is dumping more than a quart a month I would leave it.

the im taking it the rear main seal is the seal between your engine and transmission then? Cause what he did as a temp fix was unbolt the engine and tranny and pry it open just enough to put a lil gasket sealer there as a very tempory fix..but it did stop the leak i just want to verify that im understanding all this properly :P still kinda new to wrenchin but with a good chiltons you guys and dads friends' garage there hasnt been anything i havent been able to fix....so far lol But i would like to replace it just because im going to be buyin a 6.5 RC lift and run 35's
