For the last month I have been fighting a Jeep that would not start at times and would die driving down the road. Yesterday it died as I was going south on I95 and would not restart, I was stranded 25 miles from home. I had to break down and have it towed to the Jeep dealer in south Jacksonville. I caughed up just change under $700 to get my Jeep back today. Complete tune up, all new parts, and a new fuel pump, including the tow bill, all girl towing company, not that it matters. Iam glad to have my Jeep back and could have done all of this for half what it cost. The security of having a Jeep I can depend on is priceless.

When they got my XJ at the dealership they put the analizer on it and the pump was runing but it would not restart. I had to leave at that time because my ride home had arrived. The service assistant called and said my problem was the ignition grounding out so they done a complete tune up. They were doing the road test and it died on them and traced it to the fuel pump stopped runing and then replaced it. The service assitant I worked with did give me 20% off parts and labor and paid half my towing or this would have been close to a Grand for every thing. Jeep gets over $280 just for the pump.

I replaced the CPS two weeks ago, along with fuel pump relay and all fuses associated with the fuel system. Replaced EMC and ASD relay. Checked all grounds and all connectors. Traced wire loom all the way back to fuel pump. Cleaned battery terminals and grounds. Removed both kick panels checked all connections and fuses. Checked all connections under the dash short of removing the dash. I checked fuel pump connector under the jeep for power and had none when it died so thats why I never replaced the pump. I only found out yesterday that the pump only runs for 3 seconds when the key is turned to run unless the car is started, that why I never had power to the fuel pump module. I pulled every fuse and cleaned the prongs and checked the fuse recepticals on both the fuse panel inside and power distrabution module under the hood. Live and learn!
Just food for thought (i am a tech at a dealership) when the service writer offers to give you a deal on parts or labor its usually because the tech threw parts at it and it didnt fix it ( not always but thats what i have seen). Did he go into depth about the ignition grounding out? that sounds kinda fishy to me. And not all dealerships are bad. They charge that much because the techs are trained to work on your type of car not a little bit about alot of makes.

I think the ignition was a guess, he had moved the coil wire and it started. I think the old jeep fooled him like it did me several times. I would think I had it fixed and it would die on me, only last time it never restarted.

Wow, I will have to keep your situation in mind when troubleshooting intermittent run issues for now on. I always have had the fuel pump just work or not work. Yours must have been a slow death.
