Did you put in a new lift? Could be a bad pinion angle if so. To check your ujoints, just grab the ds and wiggle it around near the ends i theres play at he u joints they are most likely bad

Try removing your front drive shaft. If the humming goes away you've narrowed it down some.

well I have a 2 inch lift, but that is over a year old, it has been doing for a month of two now, and I am a poor college kid so I just ignored it, now it is progressively worse! I dont have a TC drop, I don't think I need one, could it be I fluid in my TC? I have never checked or changed it since I got it two and half years ago?

so I opened the top allen wrench bolt (not sure the technical name for it) and red fluid starts coming out, about a 6-7 puddle in diameter poured out before i could plug it back up. Is it safe to run to the auto store and get some TC fluid? Also what kinda of fluid do I get?

Talking I fully apologize

I am sincerely apologetic about my flippant remark made yesterday. Please accept my deepest apology and I will do my best to refrain from further smart a$$ remarks.
Now thinking about your situation I encountered a similar "humming" on another vehicle and it turned out to be a loose trans mount and when you unloaded the drive train (let of the gas) it would vibrate and (drone) it went away when you mashed the gas.......it was just hard to keep accelerating all the way to work

id check u joints first, if possible get your hole jeep in the air, jack stands and safely, have a friend give it gas while you walk around the car looking for your sound. i bet your right and its some u joints wearing out. my front DS did the same thing your describing. tranny mounts are reasonably priced too, hope this helps.

now on a scale of 1-10 how hard would you say this mount is to replace?

Cool the dastardly trans mount

I would try using the wrench first to see if it is just loose. If it is you got lucky, if not and it is just wasted, then support the end of the trans and see if you can pull the mount and replace it. If cost is a problem.......maybe use some washers and take the slop out of the mount. Then there is always the JY and since a lot of what you have to pick over has probably already pulled the trans then you can take the trans mount pretty easily, since they already did the work for you. Besides you never know what you'll find while walking in the grave yard of dead xj's

3- fairly simple if none of your bolts are frzen. Just need a jack to hold up your trans or xfercase. I hear frozen bolts on your crossmember can quickly ruin your day! I think it took me 30 minutes or so- all my bolts were good.

Do XJ's really ever die, or just go into a deep sleep waiting for some prince with a wrench to revive them. I got a drone in 2 Hi and growl in 4x4 from the double cardigan joint of the front drive shaft. Check there also for play/slop.
