YIKEs...seeing this post and pics makes me real glad I own a california vehicle. if it just your cargo area then go ahead and put the plate down or repair as you see fit...if if it is more then that i wouldnt bother...remember RUST NEVER SLEEPS!...you fix it and it will pop up somewhere else.....FOREVER..being that this is your first car go out and enjoy it...save yer pennies for a new or newer ride for later...as a father of two sons your first car USUALLY means your first wreck so if you just keep this as is and drive/wheel it and it gets hurt you wont be hurt so much But hey that is just my two cents Cameron p.s..how does that pass inspection??...my son is up at Fort Drum and his 5 year old GM pos car had rusty brake lines at 42k! and they wouldnt pass it...

I plan to keep it for awhile as it's the best running 4.0 engine I've ever heard, and it's been in the family for a few years so there won't be any surprises with it. I've done so much to it already... Just look at my pictures... I'm working on taking off the nss as my project for now and it's really hard to get off.... These are the kinds of things (and the rust) that make me want to go sell everything I own just to have a nice car. It kind of depresses me lol. But do you think some stainless sheet metal, with some stainless rivets will do for a few years? I know new floor pans are what I should do but there expensive! And I don't weld... I'm thinking a little paint on the rust before I patch it up? I spend so much time on this jeep and it kind of makes me sad that I spend all this time to still be left with a rusty old jeep...
And rust on xj's isn't just cosmetic, it's a unibody, it's the structure of the truck. These are the times I wish I had that nice dark blue yj that quadratech has the pictures of in there magazines! Did you know there were no 1996 jeep wranglers? They just sold the 95 for 2 years, and all the 95 wranglers have a fully galvanized frame and body!!!!! I want a nice bright red yj with a 5 speed, a 4.0, the np231, and a hardtop and a soft top! If I got a wrangler I would take out, and leave out the carpet to prevent rust, but wrangler rust is mostly on the body which means it's mostly cosmetically annoying, not the structure of the truck itself rotting away....

These should.
Passenger side, fixed. Hadn't even started the real cleanup yet:

Driver's side underneath. Floor is in worse shape than the passenger side was:

Those self-tappers are holding in a piece of rusted sheet metal. Someone thought it was a REALLY clever idea to put polyester batting between that piece of metal and the carpet. Hopefully I'm not going to need to replace too much of the transmission tunnel.
Cargo area rust? **** me, it's flat there, and your feet aren't going to fall out while you're running to the store for more parts. Just fix it. lol

I've worked on a few where the rear section of frame near the shackles was rotted pretty badly. Gotta watch them too.
Simple job, easier than the floorpans.
