How do you think the rust is? I'm thinking a little rust reformer/por 15 then patch and rivet with some sheet metal or road signs? What do you think. Gonna take the back half out tomorrow...

I have been using Purple Power Deruster for several years now, with
good results. It cost about $10 for a quart. I put a spray nozzle on the bottle.
Wire brush first, spray on a coat, and wait 24 hours.
If rust very severe, repeat process.
Primer, and then paint...

Unless some sentimental attachment, I agree with black2000xj.

Agreed, that rust is really bad, the parts that are rusted out are the areas that tie the "frame" rails to the floor and it appears the area above one of the shackle mounts. The structure of the vehicle is seriously compromised and the repair would require cutting out the rust and welding in new metal (given the extent of the damage a complete rear/cargo floor pan would likely be the best way). If you do the work yourself you are looking at several weekends of work, if you pay a body shop to do it your likely looking atleast a $2000-3000 bill.

Anything less would simply be a cover up and wouldn't restore the weakened structure of the vehicle.

This is actually my first car and I plan to keep it for a while but my a. Right now is some nice thick stainless, stainless steel rivets, and some rust reformer stuff on the rust. I know that it's a unibody, and rust is more than an eyesore, but a real danger on xj's.

How is the cargo area that rusty but the floor pans up in the front seats are clean? I need to replace both inner rockers (did one already sorta) and build new seat supports. Cargo area just has a couple of spots... lol

YIKEs...seeing this post and pics makes me real glad I own a california vehicle. if it just your cargo area then go ahead and put the plate down or repair as you see fit...if if it is more then that i wouldnt bother...remember RUST NEVER SLEEPS!...you fix it and it will pop up somewhere else.....FOREVER..being that this is your first car go out and enjoy it...save yer pennies for a new or newer ride for later...as a father of two sons your first car USUALLY means your first wreck so if you just keep this as is and drive/wheel it and it gets hurt you wont be hurt so much
But hey that is just my two cents
Cameron

p.s..how does that pass inspection??...my son is up at Fort Drum and his 5 year old GM pos car had rusty brake lines at 42k! and they wouldnt pass it...

Ive fixed worse on my '99 Jeep, i think if you're willing to put the time in to fix it, then go for it. Get galvanized sheet though. Stainless would be pretty expensive.
