Default How should an AW4 shift?

When I put my shifter into 1-2 and it winds out second gear it's almost as if it's downshifting back into 1st instead of just holding 2nd. Is this normal? I've never driven or rode in any other so I have no idea how it's supposed to act.

How does it shift in D? Smoothly through all the gears and OD?

If fluid level is correct on the dipstick, if the color of the fluid is red, and if it doesn't smell burnt, then the first thing I recommend for any perceived shift point issues is to test the "throttle position sensor". Input signals from that sensor directly affect shifting characteristics of the AW4 transmission.

It shifts smooth in D and through all the gears, even into OD. Fluid level was good last time I checked, which was a few weeks ago. Fluid is fairly new as I did a filter and fluid change on it last year. The fluid wasn't burnt that came out of it either. I've also adjust the cable accordingly. I'll give the TPS a check though. I did have the throttle body apart to bore it and just put it back together without setting anything.

Thanks for the info.

That's how my '93 acts.. if I'm going over about 35 mph and drop it down into 1/2 it goes into 2nd.. any slower it drops into 1st. If I start out in 1/2 it won't hit 2nd til around 35-40 mph. As far as I know, that's normal.

As an aside...if you bored the TB, you should flash the ECU.

Well, that's not quite what I'm talking about. I understand it will down shift when I manually pull it down. Mine seems like it's downshifting when it should just be holding 2nd.

I haven't had time too check anything yet on mine. Maybe this weekend.

By flashing the ECU do you mean resetting it? I did all that whenever I did the header, intake, injectors, exhaust and throttle body. I thought I did it right but maybe I didn't. It seems to run and idle fine and has gotten a best of 14.2mpg around town.

In 1-2 it should run in 1st until about 4500 rpm and then shift to 2nd. Basically if you want to USE 2nd you have to install a bypas switch.
