How should an AW4 shift?
When I put my shifter into 1-2 and it winds out second gear it's almost as if it's downshifting back into 1st instead of just holding 2nd. Is this normal? I've never driven or rode in any other so I have no idea how it's supposed to act.

How does it shift in D? Smoothly through all the gears and OD?
If fluid level is correct on the dipstick, if the color of the fluid is red, and if it doesn't smell burnt, then the first thing I recommend for any perceived shift point issues is to test the "throttle position sensor". Input signals from that sensor directly affect shifting characteristics of the AW4 transmission.

Thanks for the info.

That's how my '93 acts.. if I'm going over about 35 mph and drop it down into 1/2 it goes into 2nd.. any slower it drops into 1st. If I start out in 1/2 it won't hit 2nd til around 35-40 mph. As far as I know, that's normal.

I haven't had time too check anything yet on mine. Maybe this weekend.
By flashing the ECU do you mean resetting it? I did all that whenever I did the header, intake, injectors, exhaust and throttle body. I thought I did it right but maybe I didn't. It seems to run and idle fine and has gotten a best of 14.2mpg around town.
