Default How to shift into 4hi when only having a front driveshaft

First of I want to thank everyone who helps on these forms. I recently bought a rebuilt transfer case with a megashort SYE off of facebook marketplace. I am waiting on my rear driveshaft to come in. In the mean time I just installed the azzy linkage on my 2000 2dr XJ with about a 3 inch lift on it done by PO. Anyways I was trying to shift it into 4hi last night with the wheels on the ground and the car running. The car was in park. When I went to try to put it into 4hi it felt like it engaged but the part time light never came on. I thought maybe it did not come on for some wiring issue or something so I didn't think anything of it. I the put the vehicle into reverse and was meant with some horrible grinding noise and there was no power being delivered to the front wheels so I don't think it actually engaged. I'm thinking of just removing the front drive shaft, adjusting the azzy linkage from there instead of trying to adjust it with the front driveshaft being in the way.

How exactly am I supposed to shift into 4hi when I don't have a front driveshaft.

The driveshafts should make no difference. Sounds like your linkage is out of adjustment.

Thanks. I figured but honestly I am just not confident. I will adjust the linkage and see.

Try turning the front driveshaft to get it to go into "gear". The shifting procedure is to be done while the vehicle is moving, relying on that relative movement to let the gears slip into mesh. The shifting mechanism is spring loaded.

You post lists having No front driveshaft and other times No rear driveshaft..which is it..BUT..if your missing the rear, , you are not connected to rear wheels, and if your stopped, the tranny and transfer case doesn't know it because the brakes are holding the wheels but not the "missing" driveshaft and is still spinning the tranny and or xfer case. causing difficulty in shifting xfer case. You can shift on the "fly" if all the wheels are turning at same speed but if missing a driveshaft, they are not at the same speed causing issues.Try shifting into 4hi before you start the jeep, or try shifting with the tranny still in p
