Well...one night (probably 1/2 toasted), I see that my tyranny fluid is nearly black. Spent an uneasy night wondering how I'm gonna afford a new AW4. Funny thing, the next morning it was nice and pink!

I just lied to myself as a bolted the new one in"its clogged somewhere, I just can't see it". Lol

That's funny, lol I have done a few things like that myself.

 

So I'm trying to get the pan off but it's like 8/10 stuck, got one side down a little, but the side with the dipstick tube won't budge at all in the slightest, can't even get a putty knife in between, don't know if I missed anything with unbolting, I took all of the bolts off of the pan but that's it, are there other bolts??

 

There's a bolt holding the dipstick tube to the bellhousing or block. Follow the dipstick down until you see it. The dipstick tube is like 2 pieces, lower half is molded into the trans pan and top half is its own steel tube. There's an o-ring between them but 20 years + heat makes them a ***** to separate.

 

I suppose in your shoes I'd do my best to drive the putty knife in anywhere you can to separate it. Avoid prying on it. Not having been there myself I gather you can cut the tube with a tubing cutter and easily splice it back with hose. BTW unless you are after solenoids there is very little reason to pull it, period. The screen rarely clogs, you just up change int-ravels and let the detergent in the Dex/Merc III clean it up if it seems dirty.

 

I just did mine last week. Instructions said 120 inch pounds. Bleepin Jeep said 12 foot pounds. I did 10 foot pounds. Caused the gasket to squeeze out a little bit. Seems like if it's squeezing out a little bit that would mean the seal is really tight. Doesn't seem to be leaking so I am probably not going to mess with it, but does that seem right? Also, my fluid was black and the screen had some **** in it so I'm glad I did it. Also, the old gasket was some kind of (old and brittle) cork.

Also, for me the tub separated about 6 inches up from the pan. It was kind of hard to get back together so I just ended tapping the top of the tub (with the dipstick out) to get it to reseat.

First time I did it. Hope I did it right, lmao. Guess I'll find out soon if I didn't.
