True. Sometimes you gotta eat off the dollar menu to pay for jeep parts! I may have to do a write up this weekend for 97+ XJ's!

Yeah ur better off spending the 8 bucks, jus match the wires and plug in simple.
The PO of my jeep was an idiot and he completely cut the wires, so now i have to hardwire them directly.
sucks cuz the wires dont match up from the ones on 12 volt, tried it and it wont work.
im guessing its a bad ground but its on a bolt.
have gone through 3 fuses lol.still cant wire it. stupid PO.
So jus get the harness. it will make things easier.

 

Stealing the op thread here! Sorry. But I basically have everything hooked up (speaker wise) but I am having power problems. I am going to post a picture right after this post to help clarify what I am talking about.

Coming from the new wiring harness(adapter thingy) I have 4 wires. From left to right, I have a Yellow, Orange, Red, And a orange/white wire.

However coming from the new head unit I only have 2 wires. A red and Yellow wire.

My question is, how should I go about wiring this? Not sure if I should hook up multiple lines into one or what. Please !!

 

Also it is a 96 xj if that matters

 

hook up the red to red (switched 12 volts) the yellow to yellow (12 volts constant) the orange and orange with white stripe are dimmer wires no need to hook them up they were for the stock radio for when you turned your headlights on the light on the radio came on most aftermarket stereos light up with out it just cap the extra off or pull the wires out of the harness

and whats with people using house wiring nuts on 12volt electronics
12volt are braided wire and those speed caps fall off the reason they dont fall off of 120 volt house wiring is because it is a single thick wire and actually screws on use crimp caps next time

 

buy a harness that plugs into the factory harness match up the colors and don't forget about the ground its seperate from the other harness. dont use twist caps invest in crimp connectors or solder the wires twist caps are made for house wires and do not stand up to vibrations or moisture.

Well, I had originally done just that, where i matched red and yellow, but the problem had still occured. What had ended up working was matching the solid orange with yellow, and orange/white along with red. It worked when I did that.

 

And I will have to go back and redo my connections, thanks for the advice guys.

And I have become a pro at taking the dash apart to get to the head unit. I timed myself and it took me 3 and a half minutes to pull the dash and have the head unit out.
