Default how do you know which transfer case is mine???

i have a 1998 xj se 4.0 auto 4x4, and mine has 2wd, 4part time, 4full time, N (neutral) and 4lo (part-time). My friend has the same jeep but his is a 2000 and only has 2wd, 4fulltime, N and 4lo and . . .

which one would be better ???

You have a NP242. Its hard to say which is better. An SYE is much easier to get for a NP231 which is what your buddy has. But I think the 242 is a bit more desirable because of the full time 4wd. Having worked on boh however I can say I prefer the 231 just for parts availability and the damn thing weighs less. LOL.

The np242 is nice because u dont have to stop to shift into 4wd and cause of the part time 4.
