Default 4x4 question...(problem?)

So I just got my '00 cherokee classic a few days ago. This is my first XJ and I'm having a question about the 4x4. When I bought it, I slipped it in 4H to make sure that it went in and out fine, and it made the little ...moving sound like it was engaging it. When it was done, I put it back to 2 wheel. It was fine after that.

Today, I go to leave for work, and while on the drive I'm sitting at a light and it randomly starts making the noises like it's engaging and disengaging the 4 wheel drive about every 10 seconds if I'm sitting at a light. At one point, it felt like it actually was engaged...I was making a turn and all the sudden the front wheels actually slipped and made a skidding sound like the tires spun. I'm only assuming this is not normal. I don't exactly know how the 4 wheel drive works on these cars, but is there an electrical connection I can unplug to see if it takes away that "engaging" noise and then go from there? Or does anyone else have any ideas that I could use?

Thanks for the help

Josh

May need to adjust the shift lever.

Yup I think you need to adjust the shift lever for transfer case. Its not hard, just climb under the jeep and adjust the linkage. You just loosen one nut (9/16 size wrench) and adjust it and then tighten it back down again.
