Info says 4.0L so, most likely an AX15.

Sometimes I get tired of looking at profiles in cases like this since they're not filled out over 90% of the time. 89 could go either way, couldn't it? Peugeot or AX-15?

Right? But isn't it a pleasant surprise when they actually took the time to input the data?

I think they switched mid-production in '89 from the Peugeot BA10/5 to the AX15 so yes, it could be either of those. They switched from the BA10/5 on 3/3/1989 so check your mfg. date, if it's after March of '89 then you've got an AX15, if it's before, you likely have the Peugeot.

Correct on both counts.

You can send your VIN in to Chrysler customer support, and ask for a build sheet. I was surprised at how fast they got back to me with the information.

Easiest way to tell is use a little "noggin pokin".

Grab a flashlight, grubby clothes, and crawl under the Jeep. Does the trans have a "seam" running front to back where the two trans halves are bolted together? If yes, it's a Peugeot. If not, it's an AX.

AX15 on the left, Peugeot on the right. Note the casting on the bell, the AX15 has arrows that converge where it meets the engine mount while the Peugeot has what look like parallel spokes. I'm not sure if this is a reliable method of identification, though.

That bell housing trick's a new one to me. I've always gone off the look of the transmission - the BA 10/5 has two sides that are bolted together along seams top and bottom. Kinda hard to tell in that picture though, looks like a really nice RTV job on the NP231

I just thought it might be easier than climbing under, especially with all the snow and crap going around. Seems like you would be able to see this from the engine bay. The picture isn't mine, by the way, I borrowed it from the interwebs. It was taken by a guy called Nick Viera who converted his '88 XJ Pioneer to full electric.

Ooh way neat. You can tell this is a real Jeep project as the first thing done (after removing drive train) is to install a lift. hahaha

To compensate for the 1600+ pounds of batteries he stuffed in there, probably.

Where the hell did the OP go?
