At least it blew now instead of when he was driving around a corner... is the hose itself okay? Did it just blow off? I'm wondering if the PO didn't rig something up to avoid buying a new hose since it blew right after he bought it.

It should be just the same as doing it in neutral. Except 4 low maybe. I don't have 4wd but I've heard a million different things. Some say autos like to be shifted in neutral and stopped. Some say in neutral and less than 5 mph.

4 hi you can shift into while in drive. But for my 4 low I have to be in neutral. Mines a 2000 automatic

Did you develop a power steering leak also?

The power steering hose has nothing to do with the transfer case, it's just a coincidence.
