How to 4x4..???
I have jeep Xj 93 manual. New to 4wheeling.
I just want to know, do we need to press the clutch to engage into 4L?
When 4L do we need to use the clutch when changing gear in the manual transmission?How about 4Hi?

You do not have to press the clutch to get into 4 wheel drive. You put the jeep in neutral and pull the lever to 4hi or 4lo. Then you shift gears just like normal. You still have to clutch to shift.

that is probably because he knows his vehicle well. I drive a manual truck and dont always clutch, but I drive it everyday and know when to shift. You should always use your clutch unless you are extremely familiar and know exactly how to time your shift.

First off, Welcome to the world of Jeeping! Its addictive! These transmission use synchronizers to help slide the gears in to place unlike big rigs(kenworth, peterbuilt). You still need to clutch when you shift unless you get the timing PERFECT so that you dont wear down those synchros. Just shift as you normally would in daily driving. One thing you will find is that when 4wheeling, you really don't shift that much. especially if you are in 4lo. often times its from 2nd to 3rd or 1st to 2nd. You do not need to use the clutch to engage the transfer case. This practice is usually reserved for newer vehicles with safety switches to eliminate the chance of hi speed switches in to 4lo with automatic shift *****(my 2008 ram has this and requires me to push the clutch in to shift to 4lo) That being said. Only use 4lo when you really need low speed traction(rock crawling, trailer backing, icy steep roads, very steep climbs).

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

I have to use 4lo at all times when wheeling off road. I've tried 2wd and 4hi but my gearing is much too high for that. Don't think even after re-gearing 4hi or 2wd will be low enough. My plan is one day have the 2lo installed in the transfer case. Only time I use 4hi is on snow covered slick roads

But I digress, I have the clutch in and in neutral to go to and come out of 4lo. Even when goin to 4hi when rollin I engage the clutch. Just me.
