Default Horn's NOT Honkin'

Hey Fellas:

I need some of your expertise. My horn is not honking. This just happened last week. I'm really concerned because I share this Jeep with my 18 year old and I don't want him or I to ever be in a dangerous situation and not be able to honk the horn. When the horn is pressed all you can hear is a click. If you give me instructions I can follow them and fix the horn.

Thanks a lot!

The "Click" is the relay firing off. Most likely the horn itself. Check the power wire connection on the horn for corrosion, loosen the mount bolt as it is the ground point, if that fails wrap the horn a few times while someone hold presses the horn pad on the steering wheel. The diaphragms in horns can sometimes "stick". They also have a 12 point adjustment screw on the horn which adjusts the tension on the diaphragm. Turn it back and forth a few times and that may get it "tooting" again also. That screw will also change the tone a bit with small turns but to many turns either way will result in no noise.

Great info there above^. I'd still see if I could check it's fuse. Normally a relay gets power in two places, one to power/activate the relay, and another for the actual power for the device.

Good point. I just assumed the OP had checked that already. Also not sure on the new XJ's but on my 89 I have two horns. So twice the stuff to check. Mine where both dead until I cleaned up the mounting bolts.

Check for water in them. After swapping to a nice fancy front bumper, mine got water in them and died (well, only one died. the other sounds like it's sick). Replaced the dead one with a universal replacement from O'Reillys and all is good.

Default Yesterday...

...when my son was driving the horn started working and then stopped. At some point tomorrow I will take the cover off and turn the bolt underneath. In the past it was sticking and when I took the bolt off I found that I needed to replace the plastic ring.

I have not checked the fuse because I don't have the schematic
anymore. Here is a pic of the fuses will one of you please tell me which one I should check?

Also, I'm not sure how to check the power wire connection, loosen the mount bolt or "wrap the horn". Please be explain in simple terms if you can, as I do not understand mechanical jargon but I can fix it. Thank you!

On the horn there is one power wire going to it. Unplug that wire and clean the terminal on the horn so that it is more or less polished clean also clean out the plug. When I mean wrap on the horn I mean tap on it with something. if it's working then not working it's possible the ground is bad so pull the bolt out and polish the mount surfaces and re bolt it back on.

This link will provide the fuse panel layout you just need to scroll down to the one that shows your year.

Default So, this is where I am...

...do I need to go further. I don't see a wire but if stick this tool into the horn that operates the horn, I hear the same click.

Have I gone far enough? Not sure how to pull the steering wheel apart. When I removed the bolt in the middle, nothing happened.

You do not need to pull the steering wheel apart. That's not the horn is just the button for it and since the relay is "Clicking" the "button" is not the issue. The Horn is located down under behind the bumper. (at least on my 89' which has one on each side) The horn or horns each have a power wire going to them and that is what needs to be cleaned. You will then also see where they bolt up and ground as well. Those points need to be clean as well. Put the steering wheel back together and look under the front for the horns. They will be black in color and have a squared of trumpet like end on them which is where the sound comes from.

Default Hey Guys...

It's fixed! Hooray! Loosened the mount bolt a bit and then took the spring out of the hole that my son pointed to in the previous pic and wal-la! Totally working!

Woohoo! Thanks fellas!!! Until next time...my horn's a honkin'! O yeah!
