Default Horn problem, goes off on it's own while it's parked...WTH!

For the last 2 years it's happened about 5 times, the horn goes off on it's own while it's parked. Almost impossible to troubleshoot cause it's so intermittent. No alarm, I've replaced both horns and relay on fuse panel and clock spring, I can't find a short to ground because I can't create the issue. I've inspected wires going to fuse panel nothing obvious. All I have left to replace is the airbag assembly, has anyone come across this problem?

I'm guessing this is Alarm system related. If you have key-less door locks, even from the dealer, the Alarm system is likely aftermarket, so I'd try to figure out what and where the components are. You can probably look online for instructions for removing it via the manufacturers web site (install in reverse sort of thing).

I know you said it doesn't have an alarm, but are you really sure about that??

Other than that, you can test the horn relay pretty easily - it's in the PDC under the hood.

The airbags shouldn't impact the horn outside of the clock-spring related stuff.

I purchased the vehicle new it has key less entry and fob but no alarm system. Airbag assembly has the horn switch in it and of course it's non-serviceable, thought it could get stuck or somehow close on it's own. I replaced the horn relay mine is located in the passenger side in the fuse box. What's weird is it never happens when I'm driving around the times it happens is when it's parked for hours and just goes off . Thanks for the response I'll keep digging around

It may be solar heating expanding the airbag and tripping the horn. GM had that problem years ago when their higher priced cars had a squeeze ring horn around the inside edge of the wheel rim. It would get so hot inside the car that the plastic would swell up and close the circuit.

This is another case where information on your whereabouts is helpful for diagnosis. Summer...Florida....heat! I get so frustrated that so many people don't tell you where they are or even the year of the jeep. You did a respectable job to that one. Congratulations!

Very good possibility, makes a lot of sense. Especially when it's so intermittent and the times I've been called out by my neighbor or family it's been middle of the day. Thanks Dave!

P.S. Now it's just a matter of finding one without breaking the bank, I don't want to go used with an airbag assembly.

Are you opposed to an after market horn? Rip out the factory one and put another one in that's not connected in the normal way. Don't know how that would be though, or if you can splice into the regular horn wire in the steering column.... is that possible? Would it effect the airbag?

It goes thru the clockspring, but you could isolate the wire before the clockspring plug and route it to a button mounted somewhere convenient. All it has to do is ground the wire to blow the horn. I've seen floor mounted buttons before, right where the clutch pedal would be.

Kinda like the old Hi-beams switch on the floor where the clutch would be!

Yup, except it doesn't latch.

In my Jeep, there's a clutch pedal where the clutch pedal would be... still works too...

Okay, manual shift cars still had room for a floor mounted dimmer switch so figure it out! Don't pick nits!

Hi Calusa. It has been about four years, but 99 XJ I sold to my neighbor is doing the same thing. Did you figure out the issue or did you end up going aftermarket route for the horn?

Really glad I found your post because we would rather not replace relay, clock spring, airbag pad if they aren’t going to do anything.

I’m also in Florida. Typically the horn has gone off at night, weirdly enough. So I’m guessing maybe it’s not temperature expansion related. If anything, perhaps it is when the horn pad is cooling and contracting. Done it about 3 times in past several years. Seems to be starting to do it more frequently as it has now done it twice in past few days.
