So when i first bought my Jeep a couple years ago, the horn never worked. So a few days ago I checked the horn itself to see if it was getting power and to see if it worked, and it was working quite fine. Decided to look at the stearing wheel and the little spring thingy was missing, went to a wrecking yard and got a new one and installed it. The horn now works but requires somewhat of a hard push on the wheel for it to work, no worries there normally if I honk at someone its in rage so the hard push is not that big of a deal. But what my problem is, is when I am driving down the road the horn will just honk at randome passerbys. I have to quickly wave at some random person acting like I know them because my car obviously knows them...

When it does honk you can hear what sounds like a clicking noise from the stearing wheel, which is probably just the connection, soo is the spring that I got bad? Or do you guys know of anything else that could be the problem? I either need to fix this problem, remove the spring and go without a horn, or just wire it somewhere else... I would prefer to fix it, but am a little lost as to what to do...

if you removed the steering wheel check your bolts...

 

This is a new one on me, one quick question -

Does it also honk randomly when there are no other cars around or only when you are passing another car?

Ive removed the stearing wheel cover and those bolts are fine.

Soo far it honks when I am around people, havent gotten a chance to drive where there isnt much traffic or people? Maybe my jeep has a mind of its own?

 

This is just another Jeepism, one of the odd quirks you have to put up with when driving a Jeep.

Also, it does seem to do alot more often when I brake... Almost like brakeing or maybe hitting bumps in the road moves something in the stearing wheel and archs out the horn?

 

was there a metal diaphram that the spring sat on that maybe bent a little? making contact when it shouldn't be.

 

When I installed it I did not notice it being bent. I will have to look at that again and see to be sure...

 

mine did the same i removed the horn and upgraded to a hand held air horn. works wonders.
but my guess is the wire coming through the steering column is black and it connects to the horn via a male/female slide on connector. sometimes the boot wears out or slides down away from the connector if the connector is bare metal and touches more bare metal it will honk. just what ive experienced. probably metal on metal contact somewhere.

 

You have bent the metal thing or installed it bakards.

 

Bummer, I was afraid that it would be in the column. Unless anyone else has any ideas I might be going with a seperate horn switch on the dash, that is if I even want to deal with it. Im just tired of stupid drivers cutting me off! Im in a red jeep, you cant say you didnt see me!!!

I installed it the same way I took it out of the junk jeep, or at least I thought I did. There is a smooth side and a side with a lip. I believe I installed the side with the lip on top of the spring... Anyone want to verify that is correct? Its just a simple battery disconnect and 3 phillips screws!

 

With that being said why don't you go turn it around yourself and test.

I wouldnt even disconnect the battery. so it is only 3 screws.

 

Okay, that didnt really explain how it was installed. Put the spring in the hole first, then put the metal rod inside the spring with the lip side facing up, then installed the rest which i believe went a flat metal piece then a green plastic thing with 3 screws... I can check to verify that is exactly how it goes, but I believe that is correct...

 

haha Yes I can do it myself, was just checking to see if I could find a sucker! j/k Unfortinally I will have to wait 7 hours to figure it out... But thanks for your advice!
