I'm thinking about using a gate from the tractor supply co for a base for mine. They're not too heavy, and they're just the right size for a full-coverage roof rack.

heres the top section of my luggage rack i made(goes in the back of my jeep). Used steel from home depot, pretty cheap. took me 2 afternoons to build it. This could easily have been a roof rack...hope that gives you guys some ideas.

I taught myself...wasnt that hard. They welds arent the cleanest, but im getting pretty good penetration, so its strong. It currently holds my tire, and sits over my sub box.
