At some point I saw a write up on a guy using galvanized chain link fence frames for a rack. He then bolted it together with some other galvanized pipe pieces. Probably wouldn't look that bad with a rattle can paint job!

Also, maybe some non-threaded pipe soldered together would work?
Copper would be VERY soft for this kind of thing. the sections between the connections would be suceptable to being crushed.

I built a Ladder Rack for a Chevy pickup I once had,out of 1 1/4" black pipe. Once helper and I got it all screwed together and had it fitting right ,he welded all the threaded ends in the fittings. Carried two canoes with no problem.

Very true. Also some mexican would be susceptible to stealing it.

A++ on design.

however, I too will question the material.

PVC is not UV-rated. I give it a year before it becomes brittle.
it also is not rated for extreme temperature changes. that's gonna be an issue with speed variation, and windchill resulting, and let's not get into what the weather changes will do to it.

I think you have a great template...now let's see you take it to the next step

I found some nice scrap metal in my garage that appears to be unclaimed. I sense a cheapo roof rack in my future

I'll make sure that thing is held down well. I have a thing about flimsy stuff, it bugs me.

Wow, I'm inspired by the whole concept. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to play around with some ideas for one to use on Red and my WJ.

I got to thinking about this a little bit more.... think maybe a pretty heavily chopped something or other from another vehicle might work? such as a small truck flatbed or something?
