high rpm at highway speed
I have a 2001 Cherokee classic. At highway speeds the rpms remain high at times. Around 3000, normal is a little above 2000. If I pull over and let it sit a while then start again it will do fine for a while but climb back up. Any suggestions. I changed the TPS to no avail.
not going into overdrive. torq conv not locking up. fluid level?
mine is 2000 rpm at 60 mph, od and tq lock at 40-50.

thanks, just a shot in the dark but I am going to clean IAC today. Idle was a little rough but when I changed TPS helped idle and overdrive problem did not happen near as soon. If this does not help we will go see the man. Fluid level is good and clean. Still that may help.

Same happened to my 2000 xj, not going into overdrive at highway speeds. Even threw a cel code once in a while which i long forgot.
Turned out to be the transmission linkage needed adjustment.

Checked out your site. Nice! Saved it. I know on the IAC, just thought it may be causing rough throttle body issues, causing tranny to react. Snow and cold here keeping me from getting underneath. I have yet to experience this issue as my son uses jeep for college and is 3 hours away. Only time I get is when he comes in from break. After changing tps he said it did not happen as soon and as often but happens. Any suggestions/

Did you replace the TPS with genuine a genuine Mopar part?
Its always a good idea just as general maintenance to clean the throttle body and IAC with high mileage engines. At 300,000 miles i replaced every component around the throttle body including the IAC, MAP and the TPS along with the coolant temp sensor. All Mopar parts. Strong believer in preventative maintenance.
Don't overlook the transmission linkage. On my xj the Drive detent was barely there, meaning when i thought the transmission was in drive, it was somewhere in between confusing the hell out of CPU which prevented the transmission from upshifting to overdrive. If run long enough in that state with no overdrive it 'sometimes' but not always threw a CEL. And yes it was random.
There's also a switch assembly which i forgot the name....that tells the CPU what gear the transmission is in including reverse. It could be dirty, faulty or out of adjustment. Maybe someone here can chime in on that in detail.

Negative on the TPS. I had a limited window during Thanksgiving and the local dealership was closed. I wanted to see what would happen on his ride back. He said intermittent but not as bad as it was. I cleaned the IAC today and took it out on the interstate. On the on ramp I experienced what he was talking about. At 70 the RPMs were at 3000 as well as 60. I got off to come back and turned engine off at stop light. As I reentered freeway I could tell all gears cycled and at 60 and 70 RPMs remained at about 2100 or 2200. Most likely it needs to go to transmission shop to check linkage. And I will have fluid changed as well. This beast has been though all three of my sons and held up pretty well for 8 years. 168000 on odom. Thanks for your input we will see what tranny guys say.

Let us know what the transmission shop found.
If they're reputable and honest, they won't recommend a rebuild right out of the gate.
Hopefully its something simple.
My original 2000 xj transmission has roughly 326,000 miles on it with no work done on it except regular fluid changes. So these transmissions can last if they're taken care of and not abused. Thinking the odds might favor a simple fix.
Good Luck
