Hey Guys,
Newbie here... Went and looked at a '91 xj with 195,000 miles approx., stock laredo, pwr windows, locks, mirrors (as if that matters, more stuff to break if u ask me)... its got the usual wear and tear but overall looks good, guy wants $1,000 for it. Anyways, he said one of the main issues is the "detent" cable? he says what happens is the auto transmission doesn't shift out of 3rd gear until about 4500 rpms and he thinks the detent cable isn't set right?? Any ideas about this detent cable? I could google it but the experts are here!! He originally bought this jeep as a project but lost interest in it... I'm hopin to give it a good home!

All that Jeep needs is the TV Cable adjusted. It takes like two minutes and the tranny will shift good as new. Do a search right here on Cherokeforum for "TV Cable Adjustment" You will find step by step instructions on how to do it, with pictures, there.

Well, I tried resetting the TV cable and that didn't do anything. It won't shift until 4200 - 4500 rpm into overdrive... Could it be the TPS sensor then? anything else it could be? Just want to make sure before I buy one. Thanks.

idling at 1500 seems like could be a linked problem with the tps. unplugging the computer wont help you determine much, because if the computer is unplugged it wont shift (automatically) anyway. I'd go for the the TPS next.

yes you need to manually shift with the tcu un plugged
it will confirm that its a mechanical or electrical problem
with the hi idle the tps throttle position sensor would be a good start
or it may be two problems like idle could be IAC idle air controller
for the hi idle problem
and a bad TCU for shift problem

Hopefully its only one problem. Thanks for all the help, guys. I'll try for the tps sensor tomorrow and see what that does. I'll let ya know!
