I can't seem to find a thread for upgrading the alternater on my 97 4.0.
What works?

ok what years work on my 97 from the GC's? Reworked? By a auto electric shop? Which is most cost effective? Is the GC unit a bolt in with minor modifications?

How do you identify what amp output the alternator is? Part#?

Here is an interchange part number 601-00753C. They used these alternators in Ram trucks too. Be sure to check your connector style on the back of your current alternator as there is a plug in style and a "post" style that has 4 connection points. Not sure of the year they swapped over, but my 92 had the "post" style. It will fit with minor grinding of the alternator bracket and a little on the block, as the 136 amp version is physically larger that the stock unit. You can also swap over the pulley from your stocker as the 136 alt has a pulley for a wider belt. JY alternator should be a cheaper option than having it rebuilt/reworked, but you can check around in your area.

I've posted a donor list and pitfalls - pillage around with the search engine, you should find it.

(Sorry, but I honestly don't feel like typing it all out again...)

I installed a GC alt. in my '98.
Don't remember the part. #, I found must've found on here, using the search function,,
I removed the battery and and battery tray, much nicer than trying to stuff it up thru the bottom,,in fact, the larger GC alt. wouldn't go in thru the bottom.

Did you have to grind down part of the holding bracket on the alt to get it to fit?

YES, Had to grind the bracket out some, it was a trial and error deal. I probably done it the hard way!?! I left the bracket on the Jeep, using a carbide grinder bit.
