Default Help with problem...what to look at/for?

This happens intermittently after the Jeep has warmed up.

Say I come to a roundabout and stop. When ready to go again, I pull away with the steering wheel at a quarter turn. There is then a judder from what feels like the rear axle.

Also, say I'm in stop-start traffic, and either facing uphill or downhill. I release the brake to move forward a few yards with the steering wheen at a quarter turn and I get the same judder, but because I'm moving slower it feels more like a regular 'pulsing' than a bone-rattling judder.

Jeep drives fine otherwise. No noises at speed, either going in a straight line or around corners.

Differential was serviced about 6 months ago. Friction modifier (Mopar stuff) was used, according to the invoice. So I'm figuring it's not clutch chatter.

What else should I be looking at/for, if anything?

Cheers for any advice.

Ash

Thanks for replying.

They were last inspected 6 months ago. No issues then.

What could be the problem with the brakes? And are we talking about the discs or the drums?

Either, sticking or out of adjustment or similar. Drum hardware isn't the most reliable stuff.

Does the steering wheel jerk at all when you're turning? This is not in 4WD right?

I'd start by putting the Jeep up on stands (or a lift) and checking the brakes and front axle U joints for play, adjustment, dirt, and oil.

Ok - I'll get the brakes and the u-joints checked out.

No steering wheel jerk at all. Jeep is in 2wd and not in 4wd.

Thanks again for your help.

Just an update.

Brakes were fine. The problem was the LSD - needed a new clutch pack as the old one was worn out. Some damaged gears too, so had them replaced. Everything works fine again now.

Thanks for reading.
