alternator charging problem 2001 jeep cherokee

Default alternator charging problem 2001 jeep cherokee

check gauges light came on- charging gauge went to 0 lights went dim - removed alternator, check normal after several test at different auto parts store.
How do you check voltage regulator that is located in the PCM. Replacing the pcm what problems will I run into with programming to the jeep Cherokee.
Replacing battery,checking and cleaning all leads and ground.
any input will help. thanks

Try tightening the belt slightly more. It worked for me. Belts can stretch over time becoming little loose

also check the battery terminal connections. I always keep a small post cleaner / terminal cleaner in my rig as any corrosion will cause a reduction in charging.

Replace battery after charging all night slow 2 amp charge, clean all terminals and clean and tighten ground replaced new belt,. clean PCM terminals, ran to operation temp all systems
check normal. Going to run 10 mile trip pcm to temp.

Testing alternator output should be done on vehicle not on a test stand. The pcm controls voltage and output so testing on a stand can give wrong results. Most likely the brushes are worn out in your alternator.

what kind of effect does the battery temp sensor have on charging?

I have read that the battery temp sensor, located in battery tray housing, is used to sense
battery temperature.this temperature data, along with data from monitored line voltage, is used by the PCM to vary the battery charging rate. This is done by cycling the ground path
to control the strength of the rotor magnetic field. PCM then compensates and regulates generator current output accordingly.
