They're either a 13mm or 14 mm, I can't remember, but you will need one of those 3/8 drive swivel sockets to go on the end of a ratchet extension too. It can be a huge pain but it will give. Try to wipe the bolts clean of any oil and grime build up because that stuff will just make it harder to get a socket on them in that tight space.

Got the new CPS installed today... Starts fine, just as always. Idles at 1400 RPM ( a little high), but still ok.. On the test drive it still had the issue with lack of power at the start when the motor was below normal operating temp... The more and more i drove it seemed to help... At the end I was able to drive around the area no with no problem. I still feel that its a little laggy on throttle response so i will re-tune my TPS and see if that helps...

I think its ok to drive now after its up to temp, but below that i still dont trust... Is there something else that may be at fault?? something that after warm performces better?? I may as well replace it as well..

Thxs for all the help... See u on the road SOOON.

Damn, dude, after all this and still nothing?

I'd say its getting close to the time where you should think about spending the $100 on dealership diagnostics.

Since you have a meter check your ignition coil;
The Primary Winding resistance should be 1.13 - 1.23 ohms at 24°C (75°F). If the coil temperature is above 93°C (200°F), then 1.50 ohms is acceptable.

The Secondary Winding resistance should be 7700-9300 ohms at 24°C (75°F). A maximum of 12,000 ohms is acceptable is the coil temperature is 93°C (200°F), then 1.50 ohms or more.

Im back! finally figured it out after a yr or so of sitting in the driveway. I have fixed my JEEP!!!

So all that needed to be replaced was the 02 sensor (old one was shot) and the Idle Air Controller Valve. Which is held on by two bolts on the side of the throttle body (mine was caked with oil/gunk and did not actuate properly)

Replaced those two items and my jeep is back in action!! Thanks for all the help on here guys. Hopefully this thread will prove helpfull to other XJ owners..

OK guys/gals... Im back on here again! Took the jeep out last night and was running all over town. Got to a light, it turned green so i took off. Then it started to sputter again and it died. I got it started one more time but it soon died again. This time i wasn't able to start it.

So i and a cop pushed it to a parking lot (where it sits now).

Went back this morning with tools to remove the starter, as i thought it was the issue since i wasn't getting anything from it. Pulled the starter and had it tested at knechts. Its still good. Turns over just fine... So i put it back in the jeep and turned the key. It started cranking just fine, but the engine wont fire!!!

I am unsure as to what i should do next???

Is is possible I am not getting spark? How do i check if i have spark?

I have brand new distubuter cap, rotor, plugs, wires, TPS, IACV, CPS.

I know i have fuel in the rails because when i push the little bleeder nipple on the fuel rail, it shoots out.

Any ideas guys? I just bought new tags for it and I REALLY want to start using it again..

PLEASE HELP!

I had this same problem with my 89' Jeep.

I read this whole thread and I saw that you tried everything.

I also saw people pointing you in directions you didnt really need to go.

Not one person in here even mentioned the one most important thing to change for the fuel system; EGR valve.

This should be changed every 30,000 miles or 24 months.

I hope this helps you out.

Thxs for your time and post. I will be sure to pick one up ASAP.

Do u know where the EGR valve is located at?

I also replaced the fuel pump relay this morning, so now when the key in the on position I can hear the fuel pump start up again.. But still no fire.. I will replave the egr valve and report back..

THXS!
