Install clamps on fuel pump inlet and outlet hoses. Disconnect hoses from fuel pump. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove retaining strap. Remove fuel pump.
You do not need to drop the tank
If yours has a lock ring (i don't think your year did) instead of a strap, use a punch or screwdriver to rotate it counterclockwise to remove.

The same thing happened to me with my jeep last spring. My jeep has 206*** miles so its been around the block once or twice and the fuel filter was only replaced maybe once in its life so I just replaced my fuel filter and that seemed to do the trick for me.
Best of luck!

If its not in the fuel pump than where is it located? How do i do this without dropping the tank?

x2, I have an 89 and it was running poorly, went to Napa and bought a new pump. New pump fixed the problem. I dropped my tank to change my pump. You do have a lock ring, just undo the 2 tank straps and use a floor jack to slowly let it down a couple inches. Then unhook all hoses and electrical and let the tank down. Took me about 2 hrs. to change mine, that's with a couple beer breaks. Good luck
Hey,
Im not trying to sound like captain obvious but mine did that right after i got it.I went crazy checking all kinds of things. Finally i put some gas in it and it ran fine. You said you were going uphill and the gas light is on so i would guess that there just isnt enough fuel in it.The pickup is in the front of the tank so the fuel is probably sloshing to the back of the tank. Good luck!

i have a 1990 and you do not have to drop the gas tank the fuel pump assembly is on the front side of the tank if you crawl under the rear and look at the tank near the axle at the top you will see a round place were the fuel lines are attached that is the fuel pump assembly remove the lock ring and slide the assembly out
if its not the fuel pump i would check the balist resistor. it controls the fuel pump. i have an 88 that the balist resistor was bad and when i would warm up it would act like it was out of gas. its a white thing on the drivers side inner fender

Has anyone thought maybe TPS? Or maybe someone did but I missed it. Can you rev the motor when you are sitting there letting it warm up? I know when mine messed up it would run fine when just sitting but with the pedal pressed it would bog down and mess up.
Changed the TPS already
Replacing it right now... Go under the car and found it on the side of the tank right behind the rear axle on the passengers side... Got the clamps taken off and the wire disconected... I cant seem to figure out how to get this lock ring thing off.. How DO i pull the pump out??
Here is a pic of what i am dealing with...
