So I replaced the tranny and t-case, replaced the timing chain and dampner. The dampner had broken and it had jumped time. So I intsalled the new chain pulleys and dampner. The timing mark hits right every time, but it wont start. it has a new cap and rotor, ignition module and plugs and wires. I cant figure out whats goin on with this thing.
I need some help big time

Wow so much could have gone wrong with all that happening it`s hard to say. I assume when you say it won`t start that it at least cranks? Has fuel? My best guess for now without hearing all you`ve tried or tested is to go back and double check you reconnected every plug and sensor and that no wires are pinched or grounded.

I've done the timing chain and forgot to put the round pin in the top gear, it was by chance I saw the pin on the ground. put it back and felt real dumb!!! Plus 2 out of the 4 xj's of mine or my brothers has had a crank and/or cam sensor go out, maybe check them out. Good luck.

Ya it cranks with no problem just wont start. The very first time I fired it after the timing chain install it acted like it was goin to fire but the just cranked over. Is there a cam or a crank sensor on a 85?? It has fuel air and spark. brand new carb also. I only unpluged 1 plug pulling the tranny and t-case and its plugged it. the ground strap is connected. Anyone know a good place to start then I'll go from there. Any and all is appreciated.

sounds just like the time I left my round pin out. lol The sensor I'd check is the crank I think and its not fun. Its on top between the motor and tranny tight to the fire wall.

What motor do you have? I see that you said that that timing jump and that the timming marks are now lining up but did you check the dist. timing? If not check that set #1 cly. to tdc and your rotor should be at the #1 wire if not adjust till you get.

ive gotta 2.5l. the distributor wasnt pulled. checked to make sure rotor was pointed to #1 before and after install. everything shows like its suppose too. as far as a pin on the cam gear there isnt one. just the line up stud on the camshaft.
