Help a newbie???
Hey guys first i wanna say i love the site! and i know this might be off in left field but i found a guy that might trade me a 1972 cj5 with the 304 for my 89 blazer with a 350. The cj5 has the 3spd in the floor. would this be a smart trade? because the blazer is my only car and my daily driver. so the jeep would turn into my daily driver if i trade. smart trade?

We need more info on vehicles. What shape are they in? What kind of work is done on them?If your looking to get a CJ and make it your project and offroader then do it but if you want something that will run awhile i wouldnt.

Since your talking about a DD you gotta think about reliability. How reliable is your blazer versus what your know about the cj? Unless you know the guy and the vehicle I wouldn't do it. Also you probably know your blazer inside and out right? Do you know anything about cjs or 304s or the tranny(mechanically speaking). Case in point when we bought my wifes xj she wanted an suv easy to take shopping and carry the kids. We looked at this xj explorer and an xterra. I talked her into the jeep because I can fix 99% of problems that might occur because I have had my xj for 10 years and learned a lot.
yea my blazer runs good cause me and my dad rebuilt the engine so its not even got 50,000 miles on it. but its not 4x4. and my dad has actually owned a cj5 and might as well be a mechanic with how good he is at working on cars. i just didnt really know if anyone who has had more jeep experience could help me out.

Frames on CJ's were notorious for rusting through in certain area's, cant remember where exactly its been years since Ive owned one but would do a search on them.
I love CJ5's. I too was going to get one. i couldn't find one I wanted to start working on though. Ask the guy if he'd be down or willing to go halves with you to have the jeep inspected. Take it to a shop and have them look it over. Even better if you can get a shop that is fluid with Jeeps.
Cj5's are not the most desirable for wheeling b/c of short wheel base. They ride rough. That AMC 304 gets horrible gas mileage. Strong motor though. Easy to work on. Parts are plentiful.
I like the Cj5 b/c it's short. When ever I think of summer time and going to the beach. There are few vehicles I'd love to do it in. One of which is a CJ5.
Since it is older. Your going to come across rust issues. Just depends how bad the rust issue is. Sky is the limit with one of them.
Next question is, do you have the funds to repair the bloody thing if something goes wrong with it? Don't trade without having it looked over. Be smart. Keep digging on the internet for info on CJ's. There are so many forums out there.
