the cold tick was there though??
What level is your oil at?? I know this is basic but... What about the color, filter could be bad and the ADBV may be staying open causing the pressure to be low.. I am just guessing here and may be way off but I think doing the obvious things first before you take it to a mechanic @ $100 bucks a hour to do nothing but the same is your best decision..
you do need to do things correctly though and that does mean getting the bolts correct on the cover and find those loose ones.. Finding those may fix this whole thing and save you some heartache and cash...

yeah, i first noticed the oil pressure issue about 2 weeks ago and i havent really driven it since then....but it was prior to the valve cover gasket.
i just called up an engine shop and described my symptoms....he said that since the oil pressure readings are consistent across different engine conditions, the chances of it being the oil sending unit are low. He said the conditions that im in mean the rod bearings, crank bearings, and main bearings are shot and that i would need a rebuild.....he quoted me 3 grand as a baseline, more if the engine is completely shot before i bring it in.
he asked what kind of oil im running (10w40 that the previous owner put in) and said that having these problems with a higher than normal viscosity oil is more indication of a big problem.
if the previous owner knew about this and sold it to me anyway.....that a crappy thing to do to someone looking to get into wheeling.

rebuilt motors are cheaper than that 3,000 pretty steep and that is not set in stonehttp://www.psengines.com/AMC6.htm

checked the oil last night.....it was just about at the full line but did look a bit darker than i would expect (its been a long time since ive seen what normal oil looks like).
i did a loan-a-tool torque wrench from advance auto and im gonna go to lowes this weekend with a valve cover bolt to get a complete replacement set and put them on.
cant do much more this weekend since theres a lot of rain. Next weekend im gonna do the sending unit/oil change/oil pump check to try and fix her up finally
2 side notes:
1: theres some sort of fiber? padding on top of what i think is the header thats lined on top and bottom with a thin piece of metal on top and bottom. what is that?
2: my headlights are wierd.....i found this out driving at night. if i turn the jeep off and take out the keys and then try turn off the lights, they stay on. if i turn the key back to the on position they turn off instantly. sometimes its a bit of a hassle to get the in-car electronics (stereo, etc) to turn off when im leaving the vehicle too....

did you say u changed the oil already? i believe the haynes book says the pressure should be from between 13 at idle, up to 40 or so in overdrive when doing 65.
Its a heat shield. since the 4.0 intake is directly above the exhaust manifold, they put in a heat shield in order to keep intake temperature as low as possible. its just fiberglass insulation with a "foil" liner on both sides.
