as far as i know the select tracs are all time 4wd and the command is part time, i dont like the selects since you cant choose between 2wd and 4wd, your gas mileage and longevity of alot of parts would prolly be shortened with full time awd.

No offense meant, but without something to substantiate what you said, it's a stupid comment.

Now back to the OP's question:

Full time serves a purpose just like part time does, just depends on terrain and need.

Example: Here in the Pac. NW, when it's raining hard after 3 or 4 days of snow in the winter, and the roads are a mix of mud, snow, ice and dry pavement, full time works great. Just enough traction to drive around town w/o worrying about over torquing the TC.

I prefer the flexibility... my 90' Laredo has the 242 and it's great. My 2K1 has the 231 and it's great too. They each just have different conditions where they're great

if i wanted to get all into detail i would have... but theres no reason too... and im not here to please you... if an answer is not good enough for you... then ignore it... full time 4x4 is stupid... unless you live on the north poll where you may always need it... other wise it creates more wear and tear on parts and worse gas milage... these forums are full of opinions from everyone... and there never always going to go into detail... get used to it...

The newer the better, Also I would checkout www.EricsXJ.com. Eric put out a book that I got second hand when I puchaced my Cherokee and I have to say that book has helped me make the right choices.

Me and my wife both have xj's her's has a 242 selec trac and mine has the command trac.

I've had nothing but issues with her full time selec trac and never one single issue with my command trac.

We've had the chain strectch in her's along with the center diff go out and it also seems to chew up u-joints faster.

And she's never hard on her jeep like i am on mine.

I like the idea of the full time 4x4 but its cost us over 3k in repairs compared to mine and i beat the heck out of mine and only maintence i have done to mine is just change the oil out.

Now thats not to say the 242's are junk at all but this is just my experiences with it next time it gives us trouble its getting junked for a command trac.
