HELP: door hinge question

Hey everyone! This is my fist post on here. I have 99 XJ Sport and I am in the process of replacing the door hinge pins. I was able to remove the old ones with relative ease but need some advice on how to get the new ones all the wait in; I have pounded on them as well as attempted to use a c-clamp with little success. The only other way I can see is to take the door off which I am concerned I’d never get aligned properly later. Any thoughts or tricks I’m missing?

I have done this several times. I use a pair of vice grips either on top of the pin or with enough pressure to hold the pin, but not crush it. Then I use a hammer on the vice grips as close to the pin as possible.
